Japan sent prosecutors to ICC to help probe alleged war crimes in Ukraine

Japan's Justice Ministry has sent prosecutors to the International Criminal Court to help investigate alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

Justice Minister Hanashi Yasuhiro told reporters on Tuesday that his ministry sent two prosecutors to the court in The Hague this summer.

He said the ICC has a role to maintain in strengthening international order based on the rule of law. He added that Japan sent the jurists to bolster its cooperation.

Japan has already made an advance payment of its contributions to the ICC to support the court's investigations into war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began.
