Over 170 Quakes Hit Tokara Islands

Over 170 quakes hit Tokara Islands

More than 170 earthquakes have occurred at the southern Japanese island chain of Tokara since Saturday.

The Meteorological Agency says earthquakes have been taking place in the area since shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The intensity of tremors ranged from one to four on the Japanese scale of zero to seven.

The number of quakes was 59 on Saturday, 79 on Sunday, and 35 until 6 p.m. on Monday, totaling 173.

In April, the islands experienced a similar series of earthquakes that measured up to four on the intensity scale.

Agency officials are urging people on the islands to be vigilant against strong quakes that may occur in the coming days.

The islands are under the administration of Kagoshima Prefecture's Toshima Village.

The water supply had been suspended on one of the islands, Akusekijima, following a tremor with an intensity of four. However, a Toshima Village official says the water supply resumed for each household starting on Monday afternoon.

No other damage was reported as of 5 p.m. on Monday.
