Tokyo Games Organizers Estimate 7 New Cases A Day

Tokyo Games organizers estimate 7 new cases a day

The organizers of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics are estimating that there could be around seven new cases of COVID-19 per day among people involved in the Games.

The figure was presented on Friday at a meeting with experts to discuss anti-coronavirus measures.

The estimate, prepared by the organizing committee and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, is based on the number of people who tested positive during a test event held last month.

The calculation assumes that about 77,000 people will take part in the Games, including athletes and staff.

The committee also says the worst-case scenario would have one athlete and 10 non-athletes hospitalized, and 57 people asked to self-quarantine per day during the Games.

The organizing committee says it will use these estimates to try to secure medical service for the Games without creating problems for local communities.

It also says the numbers do not take vaccinations into account, so the real figures could end up being much lower.

The committee plans to take thorough measures to prevent infections by focusing on vaccinations and measures to prevent the flow of people within the country.
