Tokyo Organising Committee To Discuss Mori Remarks

Tokyo Organising Committee to discuss Mori remarks

The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games will listen to the views of its top members about controversial remarks made by its president, Mori Yoshiro.

Mori said last week that board meetings with women take too long because they talk too much.

The committee now plans to hold a joint session of the executive board and the board of councilors, with its date now being arranged for Friday.

The executive board is tasked with deciding on important matters as well as the appointment of the committee president. The board of councilors is a superior body of the executive board. Experts from sports and business sectors, as well as lawmakers serve as the members of the boards.

The president himself is expected to attend the meeting.

Mori later retracted the remarks and apologized. But he has invited a barrage of criticism both at home and abroad. About 390 volunteers for the games have since withdrawn from their roles.

The committee issued a statement titled "Tokyo 2020 and Gender Equality" on its website on Sunday, saying Mori's remarks were inappropriate. The statement also said gender equality is one of the basic principles of the Tokyo Games.
