US base cost document to be submitted to Diet

The Japanese government is seeking Diet approval of plans to extend its current agreement with Washington in relation to the cost of hosting US troops.

The government made the decision to submit a document to the Diet during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Japan and the United States agreed in February to keep Tokyo's share of the costs at around 200 billion yen, or 1.9 billion dollars, for another year.

Japan's share of the expenditure, which includes costs such as base workers' wages and utility bills, is decided every five years.

The current deal had been due to expire this fiscal year at the end of March.

The government hopes to gain Diet approval this month to avoid issues relating to payments when the new fiscal year starts in April.

Officials from the two countries are expected to continue talks on Japan's burden of costs in relation to April 2022 and beyond.
