Water Level Drops In Reactor Bldg After Cleanup

Water level drops in reactor bldg after cleanup

The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says the water level in a section of the basement of one of the reactor buildings has dropped after cleanup work.

Tokyo Electric Power Company said the water level in a corner of the first basement floor of the No.3 reactor building had risen 23 centimeters from Tuesday morning until Wednesday night.

The company said on Thursday that workers found paint debris in some funnels on the building's first floor, causing water from a containment vessel to flow into the basement along different routes from usual.

The operator said the water level in the corner of the basement lowered after the funnels were cleaned.

TEPCO said it is not known if the incident is connected to an earthquake on February 13 off the coast of the northeastern prefecture of Miyagi.

The operator said it will consider measures to prevent any repeat of the issue, while continuing to monitor water levels in the reactor building.
