Olympic Torch Relay To Start On Thursday

Olympic torch relay to start on Thursday

A symbol of the Olympics is about to start its journey across Japan on Thursday with the goal of traveling from Fukushima Prefecture, around the country, and finally to Tokyo. The torch relay will pass through all 47 prefectures in the country.

The relay is scheduled to start from the national training center, J-Village, in Fukushima Prefecture. The site served as the base for dealing with the decontamination work of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Officials want to showcase the recovery efforts since an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident hit the area 10 years ago.

Over 10,000 runners plan to carry the torch at various points.

In light of the pandemic, officials have set some preventative measures both for runners, other attendees and spectators.

The relay will last 121 days, and will end up at the national stadium in Tokyo in time for the Opening Ceremony on July 23.
