Sumo's Ozeki Terunofuji Promoted To Yokozuna
The Japan Sumo Association has promoted ozeki champion Terunofuji to grand champion yokozuna, sumo's highest rank.
The decision came at an extraordinary meeting of the association's board of directors on Wednesday.
The Mongolian-born wrestler finished the recent Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament with a 14-1 record.
He becomes the first wrestler in four-and-a-half years to be promoted to yokozuna, following Japanese-born Kisenosato, who has retired.
