Tough Traffic Regulations Begin For Tokyo Olympics

Tough traffic regulations begin for Tokyo Olympics

Tough traffic regulations started on Monday in Tokyo and surrounding areas ahead of the official start of the Olympic Games later this week.

The Japan Road Traffic Information Center says the restrictions have caused traffic jams of five kilometers or more on some roads in the capital.

It says more drivers are apparently choosing roads other than the Metropolitan Expressway network, which serves central Tokyo, to avoid paying additional tolls charged during the Games.

Drivers of regular vehicles are charged an additional 1,000 yen, or about 9.1 dollars, to use the network between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., starting on Monday.

Dedicated lanes and priority lanes for Olympic-related vehicles are in place on 11 sections near venues in Tokyo and neighboring Chiba Prefecture.

Depending on traffic volume, the Metropolitan Expressway and some other roads may see entrances closed and lanes limited.

The National Police Agency is urging drivers and businesses to refrain from using their vehicles and to check the latest traffic information online when they do have to drive.
