Traffic Control Begins Near Olympic Stadium
Traffic control has been put in place in the vicinity of the National Stadium in Tokyo in preparation for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The measure is necessary for Games organizers to install security equipment and other systems in advance of the events.
The traffic restrictions began Tuesday on a road running east of the stadium. A popular street lined with ginkgo trees of the nearby Meijijingu Gaien has also been placed under traffic restriction.
The restricted areas will be expanded in stages. A street south of the stadium will also come under traffic control starting June 29.
Further extensive traffic restrictions are planned for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games in areas including those around the Olympic and Paralympic Village and the National Diet Building. An overnight drill mobilizing 150 buses is planned for June 19.
The traffic control will continue until late September, well after the closing of the Paralympics Games.
