Honda is set to make a major splash at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show by debuting the newest iteration of its due-for-production fully electric prototype, but it turns out that won't be the only EV on the stand. In partnership with the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Turin, Italy, Honda will debut a brand-new design concept, the miniature Honda Tomo EV ute.
Honda and IED have a long history, as this will be the 15th 1:1 design model the two have produced. The stylish concepts are the thesis projects for the two-year master's program at the university's transportation design school. For this exercise, Honda sent 13 students a simple, if roughly translated, brief: "Honda next 2025 fun driving." The result is a bite-sized, curvaceous electric coupe with a tiny rear truck bed.
When we had the opportunity to try the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid on the rocky, dusty trails above Santa Monica, it had us excited to try it on our crumbling Michigan roads. Luckily, the arrival of Subaru's first plug-in vehicle to the Autoblog office coincided with a powerful snowstorm followed by subzero temperatures, and then some serious freezing rain to cap off our week with it. Perfect Subaru weather.
The new Crosstrek Hybrid may share a nameplate with the discontinued conventional hybrid, but this one features a plug-in hybrid powertrain borrowing technology from Toyota. It features two electric motors — one to propel the vehicle, the other acting as a starter/generator. Together with its 2.0-liter, four-cylinder boxer engine, this PHEV gets a combined 148 horsepower, and is actually a full second quicker from 0-60 than the ICE-only Crosstrek. With an 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, it offers a modest 17 miles of all-electric driving, but an overall range of 480 miles.

We all know the 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a truly wonderful car. It takes everything delightful about cars and driving and distills it into a compact and lightweight package. It's a car anyone can enjoy. My wife, who until recently has shown no real interest in sports cars beyond their design, wants one. I want one, too, but I couldn't get past the Miata's terrible seats. For 2018, there's finally an alternative.
The 2018 Miata got a number of minor updates. Most people I know were fawning over the new cherry-red top, but I was far more interested in the leather-wrapped Recaro seats. These are now included in the $3,770 Brembo/BBS package. Previously, that package just added a set of two-piston Brembo front brakes and black BBS wheels. Having put thousands and thousands of miles on various NDs, I didn't think it was really a worthwhile option unless you were planning to track the car regularly. These seats have changed my tune.
The new Subaru Ascent has landed in Los Angeles, ready to pick a fight with the Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, and Chevrolet Traverse, among others.
However, until it proves itself worthy of challenging other three-row SUV across North America, it's trying to get the attention of potential buyers in this highly-competitive segment with a very civilized (others would say boring) exterior design, and a versatile cabin that can carry up to eight passengers.
The Toyota Supra is continuing its slow march to production and the SupraMKV Forums have created a new rendering of what the car could look like.
Loosely based on the FT-1 concept, the rendering more closely resembles the production model as forum member Supra93 shortened the car's wheelbase and "pushed" the hood back. The fenders have also been modified and the rear air intakes have been removed. Other notable changes include larger mirrors and the addition of a central air intake.
Sales of the new Leaf EV are off to an excellent start, according to Nissan. At the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan Senior Vice President Asako Hoshino told reporters that sales have exceeded expectations, and that it has received over 9,000 orders in less than two months of availability.
Europe has made up 3,500 of those global sales, according to a report from Automotive News Europe. According to Nissan Europe EV Director Gareth Dunsmore, it took the first-generation Nissan Leaf a year to achieve that same number. The new Nissan Leaf began sales in Norway in early September, followed by Germany, Austria, France and Holland at the beginning of October. EV-friendly Norway has seen more than 2,000 sales of the 2018 Leaf so far.
By Noriya Nagashima / Yomiuri Shimbun Staff Writer Children are said to play outside less often these days. However, that common refrain didn't concern the uniform-clad children at the Scout Museum in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. Even inside, they were brimming with energy. "I really like curry cooked on a fire built with firewood," one said, while another added, "I was excited to see wild rabbits."
Scouting, which is aimed at developing youth through outdoor camps and other activities, started in Britain in 1907. About 40 million people currently participate in Scout groups in 164 countries and regions worldwide.
