TOKYO — Nissan said on Monday it is not in talks with Apple, following a report that the iPhone maker approached the Japanese company in recent months about a tie-up for its autonomous car project.

The Financial Times said the companies had had brief discussions that faltered over Nissan's reluctance to become an assembler for Apple-branded cars, adding that the talks had not advanced to senior management level.

Lexus is working to update its mostly dormant portfolio with new cars to populate currently unfilled segments. These will include a full electric vehicle, a true three-row crossover, and a flagship SUV. Many existing models will be getting updates as well, along with a new infotainment system.

The agenda was outlined by the chairman of the Lexus National Dealer Advisory Council, John Iacono, in an interview with Automotive News. It very much reads like someone trying to show how much they know by spilling the beans on random bits of info they've heard (it's definitely not anything approaching official information from a company executive), so we'll take most of it with a fistfull of salt. Still, there's plenty here that certainly makes sense given the state of the current Lexus lineup. 

Infiniti confirmed Thursday that its redesigned QX60 will ditch its CVT in favor of a newer nine-speed automatic, following its platform cousin, the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, in adopting an updated powertrain.

Putting this powertrain in Infiniti's midsize crossover really shouldn't be much of a surprise. Thanks to Nissan, we've already gotten a sneak peak at it care of the 2022 Pathfinder, which will employ the ZF nine-speed paired to the same 3.5-liter V6. The engine is tuned for an extra 11 horsepower (295 vs. 284) in the Infiniti, but we don't expect significant differences between the two when it comes to their fundamentals.

With new EV launches seemingly happening every week, Toyota has so far shied away from a meaningful commitment to battery electric vehicles. It’s a stance that may seem odd to the casual observer, as Toyota has been known for pioneering partly-electrified cars, such as the ubiquitous hybrid Prius and the hydrogen-powered Mirai.

DETROIT — Toyota says it will roll out two new battery-electric vehicles and one plug-in gas-electric hybrid in the U.S. this year as the parade of new EVs continues.

TOKYO — Toyota said Wednesday it has a stockpile of chips that could last as long as four months, and was not immediately expecting a global chip shortage to hit production, as it jacked up its full-year earnings forecast by a bigger-than-expected 54%.

Unlike other automakers, including Japanese peers Nissan and Honda, that have had to cut production because of semiconductor shortages, Toyota raised output for the fiscal year ending March.

Toyota will team up with autonomous vehicle startup Aurora and auto parts giant Denso in order to develop a fleet of robotaxis.

Nissan is in the midst of a product blitz, which has seen the company introduce a slew of new vehicles including the Rogue, Sentra, Frontier and Pathfinder.
