Nissan's E - 4orce Is A Dual - Motor Awd System For Electric Vehicles

Dubbed e-4ORCE, the system uses two electric motors to deliver "instant torque to all four wheels." The company also says it provides balanced and predictable power as well as handling that is "on par with many premium sports cars."

The company didn’t go into many specifics, but said the system increases traction and on a variety of road surfaces. It also promises to increase "driver confidence by faithfully tracing the driver’s intended line thanks to ultra-high-precision motor and brake control."

Most all-wheel drive systems are focused exclusively on traction, but e-4ORCE also takes ride comfort into consideration. In order to make the ride as comfortable as possible, the all-wheel drive system employs regenerative braking – from both the front and rear electric motor – to help minimize pitch and dive. Nissan says this will be helpful in stop-and-go traffic as drivers and passengers will experience less jostling inside the cabin.

To deal with bumpy roads and off-the-line acceleration, power is "optimized to maintain ride comfort by minimizing irregular movement." Nissan didn’t elaborate, but said the system benefits from lessons learned in the development of the Patrol’s 4×4 system and the ATTESA E-TS torque split system on the GT-R. While the latter model is all about performance, Nissan says e-4ORCE has been designed to manage power output and braking to provide a smooth and stable driving experience.

Nissan has been working on e-4ORCE for awhile the company will display a Leaf-based prototype at CES. The model will be shown alongside the Ariya concept which features an e-4ORCE all-wheel drive system.
