Suga Tells G20 Japan Will Lead Green Industry
At the G20 summit Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has pledged that Japan will lead the world's green industry to create a favorable cycle for the economy and environment.
Suga attended the second day of the virtual meeting from Sunday night through early Monday morning, Japan time. US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and other leaders also took part.
Suga reiterated Japan's goal of reducing its emissions of greenhouse gases to net zero by 2050. He argued that revolutionary innovations, such as next-generation solar cells, carbon recycling, and hydrogen energy, will hold the key to achieving a green society.
Japan's prime minister also announced plans to offer technical and other forms of assistance to developing countries. The aim is to help the world reduce additional pollution by marine plastic litter to zero by 2050. Volumes of waste from medical equipment and sanitary products have been growing amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Leaders' Declaration adopted at the G20 summit commends "Japan's determination" to host the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games next year as "a symbol of humanity's resilience and global unity in overcoming COVID-19." The Games were postponed to 2021.
