Japanese PM Kishida admits to inadequacies in campaign expenditure submission

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has admitted to inadequacies in the submission of his office's campaign expenditures pertaining to last year's general elections.

The online edition of the weekly Shukan Bunshun magazine said that Kishida's office attached 94 receipts with no addressee and description to its expenditures.

The magazine said this could be a violation of Japan's election law.

Kishida told reporters on Thursday he has confirmed that the campaign spending was appropriate as shown in the expenditures report, but that there were inadequacies in attached receipts.

He explained that the person in charge had deduced the purpose of the receipts by looking at the name of the issuer, then filled in the report accordingly. But the person had overlooked adding the details to the actual receipts.

Kishida said he has instructed his office to make sure similar errors do not happen again.
