649 Ukrainian Evacuees Are Now In Japan

Japanese immigration authorities say as of April 16, a total of 649 evacuees from Ukraine who have fled the Russian invasion have come to Japan.
The authorities say 20 of them flew in on a government plane from Poland on April 5. Another 20 traveled on commercial flights on April 9 and 16, using seats secured by Japan's government. The remaining 609 came by other means.
The arrivals are initially granted 90-day visas, but can switch to a one-year "designated activities" status if they wish. This will allow them to register as residents, find work and join the public health insurance program.
Immigration officials say they've approved the change in visa status for about 130 people as of April 13.
The government plans to continue to actively accepting Ukrainian evacuees. Officials are working with local governments and businesses to offer necessary support.
However, the period of evacuation is expected to become long-term. Experts say key challenges will be helping evacuees deal with the language barrier and easing their employment concerns.
