NHK poll: 54% determined to vote in Upper House election

NHK's latest poll shows 54 percent of respondents definitely plan to vote in the Upper House election on July 10. The figure is up 5 percentage points from the same period in the run-up to the previous election in 2019.

NHK conducted the telephone survey over the weekend. More than 2,000 people responded.

Birthday celebration for Tokyo panda twins

Tokyo's Ueno Zoo has held an early birthday celebration for twin panda cubs. The male, Xiao Xiao, and female, Lei Lei, were born at the zoo on June 23 last year.

On Monday, 14 groups of parents and children chosen by lottery attended the event. They watched videos of the cubs' first year and wrote messages on birthday cards.

Five Russian navy ships pass between two Okinawa islands

Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force has confirmed that five Russian navy ships have sailed from the Pacific Ocean to the East China Sea by passing through waters between two islands of Okinawa Prefecture.

The MSDF says the ships navigated through Okinawa's main island and Miyakojima Island in southwestern Japan on Sunday afternoon.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is warning that another powerful earthquake could hit the Noto region on the Sea of Japan in the coming week.

The agency issued the warning after the region in Ishikawa Prefecture experienced a quake registering lower 6 on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to 7 on Sunday afternoon.
