Few hospitals offer online consultations

Japan's health ministry says that only 6.5 percent of the nation's medical institutions are currently able to provide online medical services to new patients.

Doctors have been allowed to provide medical consultations to first-time patients online and by smartphone, under certain conditions, since April of last year. Approval was given to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

Russian crew member arrested over ship collision

Japan's Coast Guard has arrested a crew member who was in charge when a Russian vessel collided with a Japanese fishing boat in the Sea of Okhotsk, killing three people on board.

A 38-year-old third officer of the Amur was arrested shortly before 10 a.m. on Monday on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death and of endangering passing traffic through negligence.

State-run site to vaccinate Kyoto, Hyogo residents

A state-run, large-scale coronavirus vaccination site in Osaka will begin inoculating senior citizens from the neighboring prefectures of Kyoto and Hyogo starting on Monday.

The central government opened two large-scale venues, one each in Osaka and Tokyo, on May 24 to accelerate vaccine rollouts for elderly people.

Some 3,500 City Volunteers back out of Tokyo Games

NHK has learned that about 3,500 out of more than 40,000 "City Volunteers" recruited to act as city guides during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo have withdrawn.

This is in addition to the approximately 10,000 out of 80,000 "Field Cast" volunteers, due to work at event venues and the athletes' village, who had withdrawn by Tuesday.

Large-scale vaccinations begin in Yokohama

Large-scale coronavirus vaccinations began on Sunday in Yokohama City, which has more senior citizens than any other Japanese municipality.

Vaccinations are being given between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. every day till the end of July at a 3,600-square-meter hall in Yokohama Hammerhead. The multi-purpose facility is normally used for immigration procedures for visitors arriving on cruise ships. About 92,000 people are expected to receive two doses each at the venue.

Preparations for plum liqueur begin in Wakayama

A sake brewery in Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan, has begun preparations for producing umeshu, or plum liqueur, using locally grown fruit.

The prefecture is known as the top ume producer in Japan. A group mainly containing its growers has designated June 6 as Ume Day. Legend has it that Emperor Gonara offered the plums to a shrine on the same day about 470 years ago, hoping for a bumper crop.

Japan has entered its first weekend since the coronavirus state of emergency was extended for nine prefectures, including Tokyo and Osaka. Some facilities have reopened with anti-infection measures in place.

Tokyo reports Japan's 1st possible variant case

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has announced that a person could have been infected with a coronavirus variant that has not been previously detected in Japan outside of airport quarantine stations.

Officials said on Friday that experts at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health found the virus in a sample from a man in his 50s who returned from North Africa in mid-May.
