Southwest Japan on high alert over typhoon

A large typhoon is moving over the country's Southwest, skirting the southern main island of Kyushu. Weather officials are calling on people to stay on alert.

Officials say that as of 9 a.m. on Monday, Typhoon Haishen was 110 kilometers north of Tsushima City in Nagasaki Prefecture. They say it was moving north at 40 kilometers per hour.

Japan orders 1.6 million people to evacuate

More than 1.6 million people in six prefectures in southwestern Japan have been ordered to evacuate immediately as Typhoon Haishen threatens to hit the region.

As of 8:30 a.m. Monday, evacuation orders were issued to Fukuoka Prefecture, Saga Prefecture, Nagasaki Prefecture, Kumamoto Prefecture, Oita Prefecture, and Kagoshima Prefecture.

Three lawmakers who are vying to lead Japan's governing Liberal Democratic Party are preparing for a party election campaign that starts on Tuesday.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga Yoshihide, LDP policy chief and former foreign minister Kishida Fumio and former LDP secretary-general Ishiba Shigeru stayed in Tokyo on Sunday as a powerful typhoon pounded southwestern Japan. They conducted interviews with media and appealed for support online.

Flights, train services canceled due to typhoon

Flights and train services in southwestern Japan have been cancelled as Typhoon Haishen approaches the area.

Airline companies have canceled 496 flights for Sunday, mostly to and from the southern parts of Kyushu and Okinawa. They include 135 flights of All Nippon Airways and another 135 of Japan Airlines.

Japan's largest opposition bloc seeks new leader

A leadership race is underway among Japan's opposition ranks. Two of the largest opposition parties are set to merge next week, when a lawmaker from one of the two groups is named its head.

Nearly 150 members of the Diet have registered to join the new political party, including more than 100 in the Lower House. This means it will have nearly as many Lower House seats as its precursor, the Democratic Party of Japan, just before the party took power 11 years ago.

The southern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa is set to lift on Saturday a state of emergency put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Governor Tamaki Denny told reporters on Friday that newly confirmed cases have been on the decline since peaking in mid-August. He attributed the decline to efforts by the entire prefecture to prevent infections.

More than 500,000 households without power

Kyushu Electric Power Company says about 464,000 households in the Kyushu region were without power as of 4 a.m. on Monday.

The utility says work to restore power will begin as soon as possible after the storm passes. Officials are urging residents to stay away from downed power lines.
