Govt. to revise allocation plans for foreign workers with specified skills

The Japanese government is expected to revise plans for accepting foreign workers under a specified skills program in light of economic changes due to the coronavirus pandemic. A new visa status for specified skilled workers was created three years ago to address Japan's labor shortages. The specified skilled worker No.1 category covers 12 fields, such as nursing care and construction. The maximum total number of workers is set at more than 340,000 over five years.

Saury fishing season begins for bigger vessels

Several years of poor saury catches have tempered expectations for this season, which got into full swing as a fleet of large fishing boats left Japan for waters in the northern Pacific.

Twenty vessels departed Hanasaki Port in Nemuro City, on the island of Hokkaido, early on Saturday, the first day when boats with a tonnage of 100 or more are allowed to fish. Hanasaki Port has brought in Japan's largest saury haul for the past 12 years running.

A former executive of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics organizing committee, now under arrest, reportedly proposed that major business suit retailer Aoki Holdings become a sponsor of the Games by contributing 750 million yen, or about 5.5 million dollars.

Takahashi Haruyuki was arrested by Tokyo prosecutors on Wednesday on suspicion of receiving about 380,000 dollars in bribes, from former Aoki Holdings Chairman Aoki Hironori and two others.

US forces to continue flying MV-22 Ospreys in Okinawa

US forces in Japan say they will keep flying MV-22 Osprey transport aircraft deployed in Okinawa Prefecture, even though the US Air Force has grounded its fleet of another Osprey type due to mechanical problems.

The US Air Force on Tuesday gave the order to ground all CV-22 aircraft, including those at Tokyo's Yokota Air Base.
