A - Bomb Survivors In Hiroshima Criticize Npt Failure To Reach Consensus
Survivors of the 1945 atomic-bombing of Hiroshima have criticized the failure to reach consensus on nuclear disarmament at the review conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
Representatives of survivors groups in Hiroshima Prefecture held a news conference on Monday.
The four-week review conference in New York that closed on Friday ended without adopting a final document due to the last-minute opposition from Russia over the wording on the Ukrainian situation.
The representatives of survivors groups expressed disappointment and anger, but pledged to continue their efforts to convey the inhumanity of nuclear arms.
The survivors released a statement urging the end of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The statement also said they will call on the United Nations, the Japanese government and others to have nuclear-armed states declare that they will not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons.
The head of a survivors group, Mimaki Toshiyuki, said he wondered why the state parties failed to adopt the document as they are aware of the atrocities nuclear weapons cause from the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The chief of another group, Sakuma Kunihiko, who visited New York during the conference, said it is important for survivors to act to tell the whole world of the cruelty of nuclear weapons. He said Hiroshima can play a great role in doing that.
