Abductees' Relatives Comment On Biden's Victory

Abductees' relatives comment on Biden's victory

Relatives of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea have commented on Joe Biden's victory in the US presidential election.

Eighty-two-year-old Iizuka Shigeo, whose sister Taguchi Yaeko was abducted by the North, said the relatives have met President Donald Trump and two former US presidents, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and sought their help in resolving the issue.

He said the United States has constantly shown a cooperative stance, and he expects Biden will also work on the issue.

Iizuka said Trump clearly promised that he will work to resolve the abductions, and he wants the new US administration to start moving quickly with the same commitment.

Yokota Sakie, the 84-year-old mother of abductee Yokota Megumi, told NHK that she feels uneasy as it is unclear how the issue will be dealt with and she can only hope the new president will do his best to resolve the issue.

She said it is important that the Japanese government proactively deals with the issue, regardless of how the situation changes in other countries.
