Chugai Seeks Approval Of Covid Antibody Cocktail

Chugai seeks approval of COVID antibody cocktail

Chugai Pharmaceutical Company is seeking approval with Japan's health ministry for the emergency use of an antibody cocktail in treating COVID-19.

Chugai says the antibody cocktail combining the virus-neutralizing antibodies casirivimab and imdevimab was found to reduce hospitalization or death by about 70 percent in overseas clinical trials.

Last November, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the antibody cocktail for emergency use. Chugai filed for its approval in Japan on Tuesday.

The antibody cocktail is also reportedly promising against variants. Chugai says if approved, the government plans to secure enough domestic supply for this year.

Chugai President and CEO Okuda Osamu said that "new treatment options are needed" with the spread of variants amid the prolonged pandemic.

He said, "We will collaborate closely with Japanese health authority to deliver this antibody cocktail as a new treatment to patients as soon as possible."
