Concert Features Piano That Survived Atomic Bomb
A concert in the city of Hiroshima has featured a piano that survived the atomic bombing to mark the entry into force of a treaty banning nuclear weapons.
The piano was 1.8 kilometers from the center of the atomic bomb blast in August 1945. It was damaged by flying glass from the explosion.
The piano was decorated with paper cranes made by German children.
Anti-coronavirus measures were in place for Sunday's concert and the performances were also broadcast online.
The organizer said the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons finally took effect on Friday, but it is still the first step.
He said that performing music, particularly with a piano that survived the first atomic bombing, is the greatest way for Hiroshima to convey the importance of abolishing nuclear weapons.
