Continued Caution Urged Against Landslides

Weather officials in Japan are urging continued caution against landslides, after a seasonal rain front brought downpours to areas along the Pacific coast, especially Shizuoka Prefecture and the southern Kanto region.
Ajiro, in Shizuoka's Atami City, received more than 300 millimeters of rain in the 48 hours through early Saturday afternoon. That is more than the average rainfall for the entire month of July.
Landslide alerts have been issued for parts of Shizuoka and Kanagawa prefectures.
The seasonal rain front is expected to move north from Sunday through Monday, making atmospheric conditions unstable mainly on the Sea of Japan side of western and eastern Japan. Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is possible.
Weather officials are forecasting up to 120 millimeters of rain for the Tokai region in the 24 hours through Sunday evening, and up to 100 millimeters for the Kanto-Koshin and northern Kyushu regions.
They are urging caution against landslides, as well as flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers.
