Coronavirus Cases Increasing Across Japan

Coronavirus cases increasing across Japan

Over 800 coronavirus cases were confirmed in Japan on Sunday. The cases are spreading not only in Tokyo but beyond its borders.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government officials reported 239 new infections in the capital. It's the sixth straight day that the figure for Tokyo has topped 200.

In Fukuoka Prefecture in western Japan, 90 people were confirmed to be infected. Sixty-one cases were confirmed in Fukuoka City alone -- the highest number ever in a single day for the city.

A Fukuoka Prefectural government official said, "We strongly urge people to practice a new lifestyle that includes social distancing, to prevent infections from spreading."

Hyogo and Kumamoto prefectures saw new records of their own, with the highest numbers of infections for a single day confirmed in those areas as well.

The minister in charge of the coronavirus response says experts are assessing the situation.

Economic Revitalization Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi said, "We will make every effort to secure medical services. The expert panel will meet this week to analyze and assess the latest developments. I am looking forward to hearing their opinions."

Across the country, confirmed infections have exceeded 31,000 cases. That includes 712 people who were on the Diamond Princess cruise ship docked near Tokyo in the early stages of the crisis.

The death toll has surpassed 1,000, including 13 from the cruise ship.
