Coronavirus Cases Top 9,800 In Japan
The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in Japan increased to 9,849 on Friday, when 555 new cases were reported nationwide. The figure includes people determined to be positive during airport quarantine checks, health ministry officials, and individuals who returned to Japan on chartered planes.
The 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship brings the total to 10,561.
The number of fatalities stands at 220, including 13 from the vessel.
Tokyo tops the list of prefectures with the most infections at 2,794. Osaka is second with 1,075, followed by Kanagawa with 708, Chiba with 630, Saitama with 590, Hyogo with 481 and Fukuoka with 479.
Health ministry officials say 211 people were in serious condition as of Friday, including four from the cruise ship.
The officials say 1,657 had recovered and left hospital. Of these, 1,012 were diagnosed in Japan, while 645 were infected on the ship.
