Domestic Violence Reports In Japan Hit Record

Domestic violence reports in Japan hit record

Japanese police received a record-high number of consultations and reports regarding domestic violence in 2020.

The National Police Agency says there were 82,643 consultations and reports nationwide, up 436 from 2019.

It says 76 percent of the victims were women. People in their 30s accounted for the largest group of victims, at 27 percent. Those in their 20s followed, at 23 percent.

Experts believe domestic violence, mainly between spouses, is worsening as people spend longer periods at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. They also point out the risk that such violence is staying hidden amid stay-at-home requests by the government.

The agency also says 20,189 consultations or reports regarding stalking were made to police last year, topping 20,000 for eight years in a row.

It says a record 1,543 restraining orders were issued based on the anti-stalking law last year.

The National Police Agency says domestic violence and stalking can lead to murder and other serious crimes.

It says it will work with relevant parties to step up measures against such acts.
