Five - Way Meeting On Tokyo Games Likely On Monday
NHK has learned that final adjustments are being made for a five-party meeting next Monday to decide whether to allow overseas spectators at the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
The Tokyo Games, which had been scheduled for 2020, were postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, the Tokyo Games organizing committee, the Japanese government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government agreed on March 3 to decide by the end of this month whether to accept spectators from overseas.
They also agreed to decide by the end of April the number of spectators allowed at the venues.
The head of the Tokyo Games organizing committee, Hashimoto Seiko, had indicated she would like to have a decision on overseas spectators before the Olympic torch relay starts on March 25.
Some participants of the first five-party meeting earlier this month were cautious about accepting overseas spectators.
Japanese government officials are also becoming increasingly concerned about accepting visitors due to the unpredictability of the impact of virus variants and the infection situation domestically and abroad.
The Summer Games will kick off July 23.
