Foreign Media Cover Mori's Controversial Remarks
US and European media have reported on questionable remarks made by the head of the organizing committee of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
Mori Yoshiro, Japan's former prime minister, said on Wednesday that meetings attended by a large number of women take too much time.
The New York Times ran an article titled, "Tokyo Olympics Chief Suggests Limits for Women at Meetings."
It said organizers "already facing rising costs and significant public opposition to this summer's Games, faced a new furor" after Mori suggested women talk too much in meetings.
The article said Twitter users began calling for Mori to resign, and introduced posts such as "This is nothing but discrimination against women," and "The problem is that no one stopped him."
The French news agency AFP, citing Japanese media reports, had a report with a title that read "Tokyo 2020 chief made sexist remarks."
The article wrote "Japan persistently trails on promoting gender equality, ranking 121 out of 153 nations surveyed in the 2020 global gender gap report of the World Economic Forum."
