Giant Panda Gets White Day Gifts
A female giant panda at a zoo in western Japan was given White Day gifts by her keepers on Sunday.
On March 14, men give gifts in return for presents they received on Valentine's Day one month earlier. The practice began in Japan in the 1970s.
Saihin, one of the giant pandas at Adventure World in the town of Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, was given a bamboo toy made by her keepers and a heart-shaped ice cake. The 50-centimeter-long bamboo tube releases food through holes when it is shaken.
Saihin played with the toy and enjoyed eating carrots, her favorite food.
A keeper told NHK they hope the White Day present will encourage Saihin to feed herself.
Another giant panda was born at the zoo last year. Adventure World plans to announce her name on Thursday.
