Grueling heat wave continues in Japan

People in Japan are enduring a "hazardous" heat wave. The temperature is again likely to approach 40 degrees Celsius in some areas on Sunday.

On Saturday, temperatures of 35 degrees or higher were registered at 278 of the 921 observation points in the country. That's the largest number so far this summer.

The day's highest temperature hit 39.7 degrees in cities in Shizuoka and Kochi prefectures.

Daytime highs on Sunday are expected to reach 39 degrees in five cities including Nagoya and Kyoto. Thirty-six degrees is projected for central Tokyo.

More and more people are being rushed to hospital with symptoms of heatstroke. Some have died.

Weather officials are urging people to keep hydrated and take breaks from time to time, avoid exposure to sunshine, and use air conditioners at home.
