Harvest Of Specialty Pear Peaks In Saitama
In Saitama Prefecture, near Tokyo, the harvest of "nashi" pears unique to the region is underway.
About 40 families grow pears in the town of Kamikawa, where the fruit has been cultivated since the late 19th century.
Saigyoku pears are large and juicy, and have high sugar content.
A farmer named Yokoyama Akira says the crop is smaller than usual because of poor weather during the pollination season. But he says the taste is good, and some pears weigh as much as a kilogram.
The harvest will continue until early September.
