Healthcare Worker Discrimination Over Coronavirus

A survey in Japan has reported nearly 700 cases of harassment or discrimination against healthcare workers who are combating the coronavirus and their families.
The Japan Medical Association compiled information assembled by its prefectural branches during a three-month period from October to December.
Among the 698 cases, some reported that they were refused haircut and other appointments for the reason that they are working at healthcare facilities.
Some said they received harassing phone calls from neighbors when their colleagues tested positive for the virus.
A medical institution said lies about its employees were posted on social media, or some were threatened to reveal the addresses of colleagues or not to let staff go out.
The association says similar cases were reported nationwide and that they involved baseless discrimination that could psychologically harm the workers.
It says it will provide as much information as possible to enhance correct understanding of the coronavirus.
