Heavy Rain Forecast For Wide Areas Of Japan

Heavy rain forecast for wide areas of Japan

Heavy rain is forecast for wide areas of Japan. Weather officials are calling for people to be on the alert for possible landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers, as well as lightning strikes and gusty winds.

The Meteorological Agency says humid air is flowing to a front, making atmospheric conditions unstable in wide areas from western to northern Japan.

Over one hour through 4 a.m. on Thursday, 56 millimeters of rain was recorded in Hita City, Oita Prefecture, 35.5 millimeters in Kyotamba Town, Kyoto Prefecture, and 32 millimeters in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture, and Kawanehoncho Town, Shizuoka Prefecture.

Radar analysis indicates that 90 to 100 millimeters of rain fell around Osaka Prefecture's Ibaraki City and Kyoto Prefecture's Kameoka City on Wednesday night.

The risk of landslides is very high in parts of Nagasaki, Saga, Osaka, Kyoto and Ishikawa prefectures.

Some areas in the Kyushu to Tohoku regions may see extremely heavy precipitation of over 50 millimeters an hour. Officials say areas along the Sea of Japan coast in western Japan could have more than 80 millimeters an hour.
