Image Of Picasso's 'guernica' On Display In Tokyo In 8k

An ultra-high definition image of Pablo Picasso's masterpiece "Guernica" is on display in Tokyo.
Picasso painted "Guernica" in 1937 after learning about the indiscriminate bombing of the town by the Nazi German air force during the Spanish Civil War. The painting measures about 350 centimeters high and 780 centimeters wide.
The work, which is housed in a museum in Spain, was filmed using an 8K camera belonging to NHK. The image was put on display on Tuesday in almost full size on a 325-inch screen.
Viewers can see details of the brushwork used in depicting people and horses fleeing in panic, and a woman holding a baby and looking up at the sky in despair.
Art historian Otaka Yasujiro, an honorary professor at Waseda University, says the high-definition, full-size image shows traces of Picasso's retouches on his work.
He says the work invokes sadness in some people and fear in others, but he calls on people to first look at it without any preconceptions.
"Guernica" will be available for viewing through August 28 at NTT InterCommunication Center in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward.
