Investigators Search Site Of Abe's Shooting For Bullets
Police sent around 50 investigators early Wednesday morning to the scene of the fatal shooting of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo to find bullets fired by the suspected shooter.
Abe was shot during a campaign speech on Friday in the city of Nara, western Japan. Police arrested 41-year-old Yamagami Tetsuya at the scene, and have been investigating the case on suspicion of murder.
Investigators began a large-scale search at the site around 5 a.m. after blocking roads around it.
Police say they believe the homemade gun used by the suspect was designed to discharge six bullets at one time, and was fired twice.
They earlier found what appeared to be a bullet hole in a board attached to the top of a campaign vehicle parked about 20 meters from where Abe was standing.
Police believe the bullets fired were scattered over a wide area. Investigators searched the roads thoroughly to see whether any bullets were left.
The area is near a major train station that has large amounts of foot traffic during the day. Many people have also been visiting the site to offer flowers. Police say they conducted the search in early hours to avoid confusion and disruptions to traffic.
