Japan Calls For Release Of Man Detained In Myanmar

Japan's government on Monday confirmed security forces in Myanmar are detaining a Japanese man.
The government is calling for his prompt release.
Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara Seiji said, "The Embassy of Japan is urging Myanmar authorities to release him as soon as possible. It will continue to gather information and request his early release."
Kihara said the man in his 20s was covering a demonstration.
Several sources say he is believed to be Kubota Toru, a journalist. He apparently entered Myanmar in mid-July to film a documentary.
In April 2021, Myanmar security forces detained another Japanese journalist.
Kitazumi Yuki was indicted on charges including spreading false information. He was freed about one month later after the Japanese government demanded his release.
