Japan Conveys Concern To China Over Military Drill
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu says Tokyo has conveyed concerns to Beijing about China's plan to start military drills near Taiwan.
China's announcement follows the arrival of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Taiwan on Tuesday. Matsuno said on Wednesday that the Japanese government is not in a position to comment on Pelosi's visit.
Matsuno said Japan is concerned about China's planned military activities because the affected area overlaps with Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone. He also pointed out that live-fire practice is planned.
He said peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are important not only for Japan's security, but also for the stability of the international community.
Matsuno said that the Japanese government has been consistent in its view that the Taiwan issue should be resolved peacefully through dialogue.
He said Japan will strongly urge China again to resolve cross-strait issues peacefully.
