Japan, Eu Agree To Step Up 'beyond 5g' Cooperation
Japan and the European Union have agreed to step up cooperation in research and development of next-generation communication standards known as Beyond 5G.
Japanese Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Kaneko Yasushi met European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager in Brussels on Monday.
Vestager is in charge of digital policy at the EU's executive arm.
Kaneko and Vestager agreed that Japan and the EU will promote joint research and strengthen cooperation in Beyond 5G technology, which features faster and higher-capacity communications than 5G systems.
The two said opportunities will be created for industry, government and academia from Japan and the EU to exchange information on matters such as system development and global regulatory processes.
Japan and the EU also agreed to work together to strengthen cyber security and discuss the appropriate use of artificial intelligence.
Kaneko said after the meeting that international cooperation must be stepped up to realize Beyond 5G technologies as soon as possible. He said they will be bedrock of the economy and society in the 2030s.
Kaneko said Japan will work with the EU through various frameworks.
