Japan, Germany Confirm Cooperation Through Joint Air Drills

The top commanders of Japan's Air Self-Defense Force and the German Air Force have stressed they will cooperate for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The two forces conducted their first joint training in Japan on Wednesday. The drill involved formation training to improve communication and tactical skills.
ASDF Chief of Staff Izutsu Shunji and the Inspector of the German Air Force, Ingo Gerhartz, held a joint news conference on Thursday.
Izutsu praised Germany's participation in the joint exercise, saying it reflects the country's firm commitment to the Indo-Pacific region.
He said the ASDF wants to contribute proactively to peace and stability in the region in cooperation with its German counterpart.
Gerhartz noted that it's natural for two partners who share common values to work closely together.
He noted that the German Air Force has been defending NATO's airspace since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. He said the joint drill has proved it possible to deploy the German Air Force in Asia at the same time.
Japan's Defense Ministry says Germany is considering taking part in a multilateral military exercise in Australia next year. It is also said to be considering sending naval ships to the Indo-Pacific region as early as next spring.
