Japan Has World's Highest Number Of Covid Cases For 2nd Week In A Row

The World Health Organization says Japan reported the highest number of new coronavirus cases in the world during the week through Sunday.
The WHO released its weekly update on COVID-19 on Wednesday.
Globally, 6,565,679 new infections were confirmed during the week from July 25 to 31, down 9 percent from the previous week.
Japan reported 1,379,099 cases, up 42 percent from the previous week. Japan's weekly figure was the highest in the world for the second week in a row, accounting for about 20 percent of the global total.
The United States was second, with 923,366 new cases for the week, followed by South Korea, with 564,437.
The WHO says the actual number of infections worldwide may be even higher than the reported figure. The UN agency notes that several countries have changed their COVID-19 testing strategies, resulting in lower overall numbers of tests performed and consequently lower numbers of cases detected.
