Japan, Iaea To Ensure Ukraine Nuclear Plant Safety
Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has agreed with the head of the international nuclear watchdog to work together to ensure the safety of Ukraine's nuclear power plants.
Kishida made the pledge when he met with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi on Friday.
Kishida Fumio said, "Japan highly appreciates the IAEA's efforts to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine."
Rafael Grossi said, "The fact that we have conventional war, with troops on the ground, in a country with such a vast nuclear infrastructure, is posing extremely high challenges."
Grossi also said securing the safety of workers and inspectors at the plants is vital.
The IAEA chief said he plans to visit the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Ukraine's largest. It has been occupied by Russian forces, and suffered a fire at a training facility in March.
