Japan pledges COVID-19 aid to ASEAN

Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has pledged more than 200 million dollars in aid to ASEAN nations to help tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

Leaders from ten ASEAN members, as well as Japan's Suga, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, met online on Saturday.

Suga said the aid will include medical supplies and equipment, and technical support to medical research institutions.

He also said Japan will help strengthen ASEAN economies by building stronger supply chains and digitalizing industries.

Suga went on to say that the spread of coronavirus is a threat to "human security." He said that providing universal health coverage is important to overcome infectious diseases and promised to work closely with each of the countries in the region to achieve that goal.
