Japan To Seek Close Communication With New S.korean Administration

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu says the government will seek close communication with South Korea's incoming administration.
Matsuno was speaking to reporters on Monday. His remark comes as South Korea's President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol is to send a delegation to Japan next week ahead of his inauguration on May 10.
Matsuno said cooperation between Japan and South Korea, and trilateral cooperation also involving the United States, are essential to cope with North Korea and maintain regional stability.
He said bilateral ties remain in an extremely severe state due to issues including wartime labor and those referred to as comfort women. He said such a relationship should not be left as it is.
Matsuno stressed that abiding by agreements between countries is a basic principle of international relations. He said Japan will seek to restore healthy bilateral ties based on its consistent stance.
He also said Japan will seek close communication with Seoul's new leadership by taking the opportunity of the visit of Yoon's delegation.
The team that includes lawmakers and foreign policy experts is scheduled to arrive in Japan next Sunday to discuss pending issues and policies.
Matsuno said healthy Japan-South Korea ties are also essential to realize an international order based on rules and to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the region and the world.
He expressed hope that Yoon will exercise his leadership at a time when the international community is facing momentous changes.
