Japanese Culture On Display At Nyc Parade
About 90 Japanese and Japanese American organizations took part in a Japan Day parade in New York City on Saturday.
The annual celebration of Japanese culture was first held in Manhattan in 2007. The parade marked the 150th anniversary of the visit of the Japanese mission led by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Iwakura Tomomi.
The participants played traditional Japanese drums and court music, demonstrated kendo, and performed Yosakoi dances.
Children waved and clapped when they saw their favorite anime characters in the parade.
A woman who studied in Japan said the world has been closed for a few years, and it is good to celebrate Japan again.
The Japanese Consul General in New York, Mori Mikio, said the parade showed various aspects of Japan, and he wants to continue promoting the country as he feels its presence is declining in US society.
