Japanese, Thai Leaders To Discuss Defense Equipment Transfer
Japanese Prime Minster Kishida Fumio will meet with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha in Bangkok on Monday.
Kishida arrived in Thailand on Sunday evening as part of his trip to Southeast Asia and Europe.
Thailand chairs the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum this year.
Kishida hopes to confirm bilateral cooperation in dealing with various regional and global challenges. The leaders are expected to discuss the situation in Ukraine, North Korea and Myanmar.
They are also expected to talk about a treaty on the transfer of defense equipment and technology from Japan to Thailand.
Japan has been stepping up security cooperation with other countries in the Indo-Pacific region at a time when China is increasing its activities in the East and South China seas.
Other likely topics on the agenda include anti-coronavirus measures, economic partnership and a treaty to allow investigative authorities in both countries to directly share information and evidence without using diplomatic channels.
Kishida has already visited Indonesia and Vietnam. After Thailand, he is scheduled to visit Italy and Britain.
