JICA to aid vaccine rollout for Palestinians

The Japan International Cooperation Agency, or JICA, is set to offer free financial aid for providing coronavirus vaccines to Palestinians.

About 500,000 people in the Palestinian-controlled West Bank and the Gaza Strip have been fully vaccinated. But the rollout has been slow in rural areas due to the difficulty of delivering the vaccines under the proper temperature guidelines.

JICA will provide more than 7 million dollars to the Palestinian Authority to purchase refrigerated vehicles, portable freezers and other equipment. The deal was signed in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Wednesday.

Palestinian health minister May Alkaila thanked Japan for providing what's needed to deliver the vaccines.

The chief representative of JICA's Palestine Office, Abe Toshiya, said the pandemic has overwhelmed medical services in Palestinian territories.

He vowed to support the entire healthcare system, including establishing a cold chain network for transporting vaccines.
