Kato expresses hopes for Pompeo visit

Japan's top government spokesperson says arrangements are being made for a meeting between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu in Japan.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Kato Katsunobu said on Wednesday that Pompeo will take part in a four-way meeting with the foreign ministers of Japan, Australia and India during his visit to Tokyo.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kato said he hopes the separate meeting between Motegi and Pompeo will provide a valuable opportunity to further strengthen the Japan-US alliance and to coordinate efforts toward a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Kato added that arrangements are also under way for Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide to meet with Pompeo.
