Kishida May Meet Pelosi On Friday

Japanese government sources say arrangements are underway for Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to meet US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Japan on Friday. The meeting would be held amid heightened tensions between the United States and China over Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.

Pelosi is scheduled to arrive in Japan on Thursday and will meet senior political figures during her two-day visit.

Kishida and Pelosi are expected to discuss China, North Korea and other regional issues, as well as Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday night as part of her Asia tour, becoming the first incumbent US House speaker to travel to Taiwan in 25 years. She met Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday.

China sharply reacted to her visit to Taiwan, declaring plans to stage military exercises around Taiwan.
